EnMed is an integrated engineering and medical education program with a focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. It is a partnership between the Texas A&M University Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine, Texas A&M College of Engineering and Houston Methodist Hospital.
EnMed students will fulfill all academic and professional requirements for the medical degree, but will engage in additional experiences involving engineering, innovation and entrepreneurship. These experiences are integrated into the curriculum from day one, uniquely preparing EnMed graduates to be leaders in inventing and applying cutting-edge technologies into medical practice.
Students interested must first apply to the Texas A&M Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine through the TMDSAS or AMCAS website. During the secondary application, prospective students can apply to the EnMed program as an option. The application process and requirements for applying can be found on the admissions webpage.
Along with meeting the requirements for the Texas A&M Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine, students must also have completed a bachelor’s degree in engineering, or computer science, and demonstrate experience in entrepreneurship or innovation. One of the letters of recommendation required for admission must be from a faculty member in engineering, computer science, physics, mathematics, or similar discipline.
Medical students must possess a broad range of competencies to successfully learn and develop in medical school and become effective physicians. The School of Engineering Medicine adheres to the premed competency model while reviewing applicants including a strong focus on professionalism, critical thinking and reasoning, and basic science competencies. This model serves as a roadmap for students as they prepare to succeed in medical school.
Dress the part! Business professional attire should be observed. Tennis shoes and other ‘casual’ attire are not appropriate.
Yes, out-of-state candidates are encouraged to apply.
Yes, translational research is an integral part of this program.
No, students do not have to invent something before they graduate. Every student has the opportunity to contribute to new engineering and medical technologies before graduation through innovation experiences built into the program.
Students will earn a Master of Engineering in Engineering and Doctor of Medicine Combined Degree Program through Texas A&M Naresh K. Vashisht College of Medicine and Texas A&M College of Engineering, respectively.
The EnMed curriculum is four years to complete both degrees.
Only the MCAT exam is required.
Consideration is given only to applicants who are U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents (Green Card bearers). Acceptance and enrollment are contingent upon providing official documentation at the time of medical school application and before matriculation of either by becoming a US citizen through naturalization or attaining lawful US permanent residency. The School of Engineering Medicine generally does not consider students for transfer or advanced standing from any medical schools (Allopathic or Osteopathic) in the country or internationally.
