We encourage all students not to borrow more than their estimated cost of attendance. Instead, we encourage students to create their own budget to help them determine their living expenses and, if necessary, the loan amount needed to cover them.

The AAMC offers FIRST (Financial Information, Resources, Services, and Tools) to support medical education financial wellness. FIRST provides students with unbiased and reliable guidance about paying for medical school, managing money, and successfully repaying student loans.

A loan is money you borrow and must pay back with interest. If you decide to take out a loan, make sure you understand who is making the loan and the terms of the loan. Student loans can come from the U.S. Department of Education or private sources, such as a bank or financial institution. Federal loans often offer borrowers lower interest rates. They also may have more flexible repayment options than loans from banks or other private sources. Visit the Federal Student Aid website for details on types of loans offered.

Alternative (private) loans are administered and processed by private lending institutions to be used for educational costs after exhausting potentially more favorable federal and state financial aid options first.

Scholarships are a great way to help pay for college and are one of many ways that you can fund your education. University scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit, leadership/participation, and financial need or any combination of these items. The School of Engineering Medicine offers a limited number of departmental scholarships for incoming students, separate from the University Scholarship Application. Admitted students are notified via email of these scholarship opportunities.

The Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) is the military’s way to fund health students (medical, dental, etc.) at universities like Texas A&M, offering full tuition, stipends, and bonuses in exchange for a service commitment after graduation, with Army, Navy, and Air Force branches providing the funds and requiring strong academics, leadership, and military fitness for selection, often involving ROTC participation.

Veteran Resource Support Center (VRSC)
Student veterans who have completed their service or interrupted their education to serve, are returning or began their studies elsewhere and are now transferring to Texas A&M University are invited to contact the Don & Ellie Knauss Veteran Resource & Support Center (VRSC). This office provides caring and personalized support to Aggie undergraduate, graduate, and professional student veterans.

Financial Wellness – FAQ
Yes, if you want to be awarded Federal Student Aid (i.e., Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans) and Health Professions loans, as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
Log on to studentaid.gov to complete a FAFSA Application.

Students will be issued a “refund” whenever the amount of funds applied to their student account exceeds the amount of tuition and fee charges billed to them. Many students choose to accept more financial aid funds than are needed to pay their tuition and fees so they can receive a refund to pay for their books and living expenses.
Refund methods include:
- Direct Deposit to a checking or savings account (Recommended)
- Paper Check – Mailed to Student’s Address
Student Business Services has 14 calendar days of the date the credit appeared on your student account to issue a refund in the manner the student has selected.
Tax forms are available in the Howdy portal around April of each year.
Test prep is included in the Cost of Attendance (COA) calculations for medical students. Students enrolled in programs that require professional licensure, certification, or a first professional credential to practice or participate in the occupation the program is preparing the student to enter, the COA must include an allowance for the costs of obtaining the license, certification, or credential.
Residency interview travel costs are included in the Cost of Attendance (COA) calculations for medical students. Review the AAMC website for more information on residency interview tips.
Yes, the maximum adjustment for the purchase of a computer is $2,500, which may include the cost of a warranty and printer. Students must request a one-time Cost of Attendance adjustment for a computer purchase, subject to applicable policies.
Medical students experiencing unexpected, unforeseen and urgent financial hardships can apply for emergency aid. Information on the Emergency Aid application process is available on the Aggie One Stop Emergency Aid webpage.
