Dr. Raja Muthupillai is a biomedical imaging scientist whose work has helped shape modern magnetic resonance imaging and its clinical translation. He currently serves as Research Professor at the Texas A&M School of Engineering Medicine and as Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of Live Healthy Imaging / ForeSpect PLLC. He is also Professional Staff at the Texas Heart Institute.

Dr. Muthupillai earned his PhD in Biomedical Sciences, with a Biomedical Imaging Track, from Mayo Clinic and Foundation, and his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering from the University of Madras. He is board certified by the American Board of Radiology and the American Board of Medical Physics in MRI and is certified as an MR Safety Expert.

His landmark 1995 Science publication introduced magnetic resonance elastography, an MRI-based method for visualizing acoustic strain waves and mapping tissue stiffness noninvasively. This pioneering work helped establish MRE as a platform with applications in liver disease, muscle, brain, cardiac, and oncologic imaging. His broader research focuses on rapid MR imaging methods for evaluating myocardial structure, function, flow, viability, fibrosis, and coronary risk, as well as renal imaging, molecular MRI contrast agents, automated cardiac segmentation, metabolic disease, and preventive cardiovascular medicine.

Dr. Muthupillai has published extensively, holds several patents, and his work is cited widely. His current work emphasizes expanding access to advanced, cost-effective imaging beyond tertiary-care settings to support earlier diagnosis, better clinical decisions, and improved care in underserved communities. He is the co-founder of two companies that focus on medical imaging technologies and services.
