Dr. Tanmay Lele, Senior Associate Dean of Engineering and Research at Texas A&M’s School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed), is a CPRIT Scholar in Cancer Research dedicated to understanding how physical forces inside our bodies influence cells and tissues – particularly in cancer. His research examines how structural changes in cell and tissue contribute to cancer, with the goal of developing new treatment approaches.

After earning a doctorate in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 2002, Lele pursued research in vascular biology at Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital. Before coming to Texas A&M, he taught at the University of Florida. Today, his work focuses on the role of mechanical changes in cells and tissues in cancer development.

Outside the lab, Lele enjoys playing the tabla, a traditional Indian drum, and immersing himself in classical Indian music. He’s also an avid cricket fan, always eager for a match when he has a chance. His passion for music and sports provides a refreshing balance to his academic and research pursuits.

A quote that inspires Lele comes from Sherlock Holmes in A Scandal in Bohemia:

“It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly, one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.”

This philosophy guides Dr. Lele’s approach to science—letting the facts lead the way.

Lele’s commitment and hard work in advancing cancer research make him an inspirational figure in healthcare innovation. We are excited to have him on our team and look forward to the discoveries he will continue to contribute to the field of cancer research.
