Update 4: We’re now listening to Houston Methodist Hospital President Marc Boom interview legendary athlete and social activist Renaldo Nehemiah. He’s truly a unique athlete, and is now discussing the missed opportunity with the USA boycotting the Olympics while he was in his prime. Interesting that many assume he is a gold medalist considering his world records; however, the boycott cost him his opportunity. This played a role in his decision to consider the NFL despite the fact that he did not play in college. Great story about how he ended up with the 49ers even after hanging up on Bill Walsh thinking it was a prank!
Update 3: We’re now listening to a great discussion between Dr. Roderic Pettigrew and Nobel Laureate in Chemistry, Dr. Peter Agre. He talks about his journey and was asked about work-life balance. He told a great anecdote about getting an epiphany about a problem during a trip to Disneyworld. You never know when the inspiration may hit you. He’s also speaking on his efforts regarding global health and helping underserved populations.
Update 2: We’re now listening to Dr. Paul Yock, the creator of the Standford Biodesign program. The ideas in the Standford Biodesign program inform a significant portion of the engineering elements in the EnMed program. So this is yet another great experience for our students and faculty, who are in the audience, as well as the other invited guests. The format for this session is an interview between Dr. John Cooke, for the Methodist Hospital Research Institute and Dr. Yock. We’re now learning how Standford Biodesign came to be. Very interesting considering the ongoing development of the EnMed program.
Update 1: Distinguished speaker, Dr. Donald Ingber, Director of the Wyss Institute for Biologically-Inspired Engineering at Harvard is now addressing the audience and providing insight into the translational nature of the work conducted at the institute. The work he’s done with his organ-on-a-chip models is amazing. As he continues discussing other work being conducted at the Wyss Institute, it is clear that he was the perfect choice to serve as our distinguished speaker for this event – very inspiring and consistent with the goals of the EnMed program.
Today EnMed is hosting its Inaugural Celebration Symposium to celebrate the recent launch of the program and its inaugural class. Texas A&M Vice Chancellor of Engineering and National Laboratories and Dean of Engineering, Dr. M. Katherine Banks just completed her welcoming remarks and EnMed Executive Dean, Dr. Roderic I. Pettigrew is now addressing the audience.
