The Intercollegiate School of Engineering Medicine recently held an education grand round on backward instructional design presented by Dr. Daniel Novak, assistant professor of clinical medical education at the University of Southern California’s
Keck School of Medicine. Backward instructional design is a three-step curriculum development technique where the process of designing a lesson or course starts with the articulation of learning outcomes, followed by the development of assessments and concluding with the design of instructional materials. More than 50 EnMed faculty attended the grand round, including clinicians, engineers and basic science educators from the Texas A&M University College of Medicine and College of Engineering.
Novak also recently collaborated with EnMed faculty to redesign the team-based learning activities within the respiratory course, which included reflective and experiential learning experiences, and culminated with a hands-on activity that featured student-built mechanical ventilators. Novak’s visit to EnMed concluded with a tour of the facility.
