In less than one month, the world’s first class of Physicianeers will make history and transform health care, forever. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Texas A&M University School of Engineering Medicine will host the inaugural graduation of EnMed students.
Four years of unparalleled hard work and determination culminate as the health care community embraces to meet the world’s first class of Physicianeers. This unprecedented occasion, which takes place over the course of two-day events, continues to fuel anticipation as we approach this exciting moment.
The EnMed program is a collaboration between Houston Methodist Hospital and the School of Engineering Medicine representing a new era in health care education globally. Students are trained to be health care leaders who are equipped to use engineering and technological innovation to transform health care. Each graduate will earn simultaneous medical doctorate and Master of Engineering Innovation degrees in only four years with a concurrent health care invention.
To celebrate EnMed’s first graduating class, on Friday, May 19, Roderic I. Pettigrew, PhD, MD, inaugural dean of the School of Engineering Medicine, will host a Nobel Laureates & Inventor of the Internet Colloquy. In this momentous event, distinguished Nobel laureates will come together to share their insights and perspectives on the convergence of science, engineering, and medicine and the ways in which their groundbreaking work has paved the way for new discoveries and advancements in health care.
Moderated by President Emerita of MIT Susan Hockfield, PhD, the colloquy panel will feature internationally distinguished guests, including Vinton Cerf, PhD, co-inventor of the Internet and vice president of Google (via Zoom), Phillip Sharp, PhD, Nobel 1993 and author of “From X-rays to DNA: How Engineering Drives Biology,” Martin Chalfie, PhD, Nobel 2008 and recipient of the Congressional Award for research impacting society, Carolyn Bertozzi, PhD, Nobel 2022 and founder of Stanford’s ChEM H, which bridges chemistry, engineering, and medicine, and Peter Agre, MD, Nobel 2007 (via Zoom), director of Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute and an EnMed inaugural event speaker, 2019. Other special guests include EnMed commencement speaker Francis Collins, PhD, MD, celebrated geneticist who mapped the human genome, and is the longest-serving director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and recent science advisor to President Biden. In a once-in-a-lifetime event, these renowned scientists and health care leaders will come together to celebrate the first class of physicianeers and the next step in the world of medicine.
EnMed’s landmark graduation marks a significant milestone for the School of Engineering Medicine, Houston Methodist Hospital, and society. A new era of health care will begin at the intersection of cutting-edge innovation and medicine as EnMed students stand in the forefront of the first generation of Physicianeers.
