Alejandro Rubio
Bioengineering, Rice University
Alejandro “Alex” Rubio grew up in Laredo, Texas, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering from Rice University.
At Rice, Alex distinguished himself through a commitment to engineering innovation, leadership, and service. As an incoming student, he was selected as a Trustee Brown Scholar, one of Rice University’s premier merit-based scholarships, and was one of eleven seniors to be honored as an Outstanding Senior at graduation. Alex also served as President of his residential college, representing more than 400 students and working alongside university leadership to strengthen student life and foster an inclusive campus community.
Alex’s passion for engineering and medicine has been shaped through research, clinical experiences, and medical device design. At the Texas Heart Institute, he conducts research in regenerative medicine focused on bioartificial hearts, decellularization and recellularization techniques, and perfusion bioreactors. He also interned at MD Anderson Cancer Center’s IDEAS Lab, where he developed software for longitudinal tracking of implantable fiducial markers, enabling more accurate monitoring of soft tissue tumors and improving precision in image-guided oncologic treatment. At Rice, he contributed to improving the LUCIA device, an affordable technology designed to teach clinicians in low-resource settings various screening techniques for cervical and uterine cancers. Additionally, his senior design capstone project, which focused on developing an at-home pediatric tracheostomy basic and emergency care simulator, earned First Place in the Excellence in Capstone Engineering Award at the Oshman Engineering Design Showcase. Together, these experiences strengthened his passion for translating engineering innovation into technologies that improve patient care.
Alex chose the EnMed program because it provides a unique environment where engineering and medicine are fully integrated, allowing future physicians to not only treat disease, but also design the technologies that transform patient care. He was drawn to the program’s emphasis on innovation and entrepreneurship, as well as the opportunity to work alongside engineers, clinicians, and industry partners. Through EnMed, Alex hopes to develop technologies that improve surgical care while building a career in cardiothoracic surgery with interests in heart transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, and pediatric congenital heart surgery.
Outside the classroom, Alex enjoys playing volleyball, experimenting in the kitchen, watching horror movies, and listening to country music. As he continues his training, Alex hopes to combine compassionate patient care with engineering innovation to improve outcomes for patients facing complex cardiovascular disease and to contribute to the future of cardiothoracic surgery.
