Biomedical Engineering, University of Michigan     

Natalie Hanby was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, and earned her bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Michigan – Go Blue! As an undergraduate, she conducted tissue engineering research focused on developing a biomimetic hydrogel model of the human ovary. This work sparked her interest in translating engineering into clinical care. Outside the lab, Natalie served as Vice President of Philanthropy for her biomedical engineering fraternity, contributed to a global health engineering project, and volunteered and worked at Michigan Medicine.

After graduation, Natalie joined the National Institutes of Health as a Research Fellow in the Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Lab. Over the next two years, she worked at the bench and in the operating room to investigate the etiology of rare gynecologic conditions and strategies for fertility preservation. Along the way, she presented her work at national conferences, contributed to multiple publications, and strengthened her commitment to advancing patient care.

When Natalie discovered the EnMed program, she knew it was the ideal place to pursue that goal. She was drawn to a medical education that empowers physicians not only to provide exceptional care but also to identify unmet needs and design better solutions. Building on her background in tissue engineering, she hopes to integrate regenerative medicine with reconstructive surgery to restore function and improve quality of life for her future patients.

Outside of medicine, Natalie enjoys running, cooking, spending time outdoors, and eating ice cream. She also has a bit of wanderlust and dreams of exploring as much of the world as she can.
