Victoria Villarreal
Material Science, Stanford University
Victoria Villarreal grew up on the U.S.–Mexico border in El Paso, Texas, United States. She graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Materials Science and Engineering with a concentration in Bioengineering. Motivated by the potential of engineering to improve human health, Villarreal conducted tissue-engineering research in Stanford’s Heilshorn Biomaterials Group and studied vascular bioengineering at Boston Children’s Hospital as a Harvard Amgen Scholar. After graduation, she joined the Wainger Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, where she contributed to preclinical ALS modeling and drug-screening studies.
Villarreal has maintained a strong commitment to mentorship and community engagement. Through the STEMentors program, she mentored undergraduates from underserved backgrounds in chemistry and helped develop a curriculum centered on peer-to-peer learning. As outreach director for the Stanford Society of Latinx Engineers, she prepared K–12 students from an underserved community for the Tech Challenge engineering competition. She also served as a Spanish-language interpreter at the Cardinal Free Clinics. Later, while living in Boston, she taught medical Spanish to healthcare professionals through the AES World Languages and Cultures Institute.
Villarreal chose the EnMed program because its curriculum will allow her to approach clinical challenges through scientific investigation and engineering design. She hopes to strengthen her ability to translate research discoveries into practical technologies for patients. Drawing on her background in biomaterials and tissue engineering, she is particularly interested in regenerative applications within otolaryngology, reconstructive surgery, and dermatology. She also looks forward to serving Houston’s Latino community through clinical volunteering and educational outreach.
Alongside her interests in engineering and education, Villarreal has maintained a lifelong connection to classical ballet. She danced with Cardinal Ballet Company throughout college, later taught ballet to young children, and now enjoys attending Houston Ballet performances. She also enjoys staying active, spending time with family, trying new recipes, and chronicling her Houston restaurant discoveries on Beli.
