Elizabeth Bixler
Biomedical Engineering, Brown University
Elizabeth Bixler joins EnMed from Philadelphia. She received her bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering with honors from Brown University in Rhode Island. While at Brown University she played on the club Ultimate Frisbee team, was captain of the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers team, and wrote a research thesis on adipose-derived stem cells. During summers, she did research on her thesis and a separate research project at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, evaluating the neurological effects of congenital heart defect interventions in neonates, which is a project she began working on in high school.
After graduating from Brown, she worked for almost 3 years in research and development at the medical device company Medtronic in Minneapolis, MN. Her work at Medtronic focused on devices that treat peripheral artery disease including percutaneous balloon angioplasty and atherectomy. During this time she also volunteered at a hospital, played lots of Ultimate Frisbee and coached a women’s/non-binary Ultimate Frisbee team at a local high school.
“I hope to gain the skills and background needed to identify gaps in clinical care, and ideate to create solutions that improve clinical practice for both patients and clinicians” she said. “I love interdisciplinary work and I believe the similarities between medicine and engineering should be highlighted and used to create innovation.”
For hobbies, Bixler enjoys ultimate frisbee, running, biking (find her commuting to the hospital on her trusty bike!), reading, and baking (her sourdough starter’s name is Camilla). She also picked up cross-country skiing while living in Minneapolis.
