Lais Haddad
Biomedical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin
Lais Haddad was raised in Damascus, Syria, and earned a Bachelors of Science in Biomedical Engineering with High Honors from the University of Texas at Austin. As an undergrad, Lais was involved in Dr. Tyrone Porter’s lab to develop more effective drug delivery agents for pancreatic cancer. He also worked with the Department of Defense for his senior capstone project to develop universal blood transfusion technologies for wounded soldiers in combat.
During his time at UT Austin, Lais spent 3 years on the instructional team of UT Austin’s Intro Biology Lab (BIO 206L) under Dr. Martha Maas. In 23-24, he helped revamp the course’s curriculum by creating a library of educational videos on safe BSL-2 lab techniques. In recognition of his contributions to BIO 206L, Lais was awarded the 23-24 Bio Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award and was chosen as a finalist for the 2024 President’s Student Employee of the Year Award.
Lais chose EnMed due to his desire to bridge gaps in healthcare using a blend of medicine and engineering. As a future physicianeer, he hopes to leverage his engineering experience to help him better detect and address clinical problems, with an aim to provide improved outcomes for his patients and to people all around the world.
Outside of the classroom, Lais enjoys being active by playing soccer, volleyball, swimming, and going to the gym. He also likes to play guitar, listen to music, and watch his favorite soccer club, FC Barcelona.
