Shivani Sista
Computer Science, University of California, Santa Barbara
Shivani Sista was raised in Fremont, CA, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of California, Santa Barbara.
During her time in undergrad, Shivani worked in the UCSB Bionic Vision Lab utilizing machine learning and mathematical modeling to develop treatments for patients with retinitis pigmentosa. Her first project involved optimizing stimulus parameters to predict light pulses induced by retinal implants upon external visual input. She also worked on developing predictive models for the brightness decay of these light pulses over time. Her group’s work was presented at the 2024 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference. Shivani also received an honorable mention recognition for Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher, awarded by the Computing Research Association.
In addition to research, Shivani was heavily involved in the Society of Women Engineers at UCSB. She organized and led STEM volunteering programs for teaching K-12 students in the greater Santa Barbara area, including coding classes and hands-on science experiments. As president, she also oversaw communication with industry and research representatives regarding professional development opportunities for students on campus.
Shivani chose EnMed because she is interested in learning how to merge technology and medicine to increase healthcare accessibility, as well as develop innovative treatments for a diverse patient population with varying needs.
In her free time, Shivani enjoys drawing, reading, trying out new recipes, playing the violin, and listening to music. She also enjoys playing all kinds of sports recreationally, and spending time with her family and friends.
