Biomedical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology

Varun Kumar hails from Cumming, GA and graduated summa cum laude with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology. There, he was involved in research focusing on developing high fidelity assays to improve preclinical testing of potential idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis treatments. Kumar also served as a teaching assistant in several subjects, including anatomy, physiology, statics, and calculus I. Lastly, during his capstone course, Kumar and his team developed a provisionally patented method for the blind retrieval of ureteral stents.

After graduation, Kumar spent a year as a ventricular assist device engineer with Emory Healthcare. During that year, he worked closely with patients with LVADs, following them through all aspects of their care; while in this role, Kumar took call on the 24/7 LVAD equipment emergency line, responding to patient equipment questions and helping coordinate the potential need for emergent care.

Kumar chose EnMed because it would provide him a structured environment where he will not only be trained as a physician capable of taking excellent care of patients, but also as an engineer capable of improving the accessibility and efficacy of available therapeutic options.

Outside of academics, Kumar enjoys running, ping pong, driving, hanging out with friends, and watching sitcoms.
