Gabriela Roque Oliveira Nomura
Biomedical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin
Gabriela Roque Oliveira Nomura was born in the city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and was the recipient of the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Outstanding Scholar-Leader Award. As an undergraduate, Gabriela was very active in machine-learning research to improve radiotherapy treatment for lung cancer patients. She received a two-year research supplement from the National Institutes of Health to work on a deep-learning algorithm for the calculation of functional lung metrics. Her work was published as a first-author paper in Frontiers in Oncology, and it was featured as an oral presentation at the 2024 American Society for Radiation Oncology Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C.
Gabriela chose EnMed because she believes in the idea of a “physicianeer.” Someone who is trained in both medicine and engineering is certainly prepared to tackle modern medicine’s most challenging problems. She is passionate about AI-integrated medical devices for the early diagnosis of diseases and looks forward to continuing this work at EnMed.
Outside of academics, Gabriela enjoys spending time with her dog, Thunder, listening to bossa nova vinyl records at home, and caring for her houseplants. She also finds joy in service, from mentoring elementary school students in after-school programs to sharing conversations with hospice patients in assisted living facilities.
