John Cai
Mechanical Engineer, Johns Hopkins University
John is a physician in training dedicated to addressing unmet clinical needs through patient-centered care and medical device innovation. He graduated with General Honors from Johns Hopkins University with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Born in Durham, North Carolina, John has also lived in Ohio, Texas, and Arkansas before calling Baltimore, Maryland, home after college.
Prior to EnMed, John was the founding engineer at CraniUS, a medical device spin-out from Johns Hopkins developing a cranial implant designed to treat glioblastoma using convection enhanced delivery. As the Director of Mechanical Engineering, John helped CraniUS raise a $19.4M Series A, led a team of engineers to design a novel MRI-conditional drug pumping system, and conducted cadaver and large animal studies to evaluate the implant’s design and functionality. John holds multiple patents in the medical device field, ranging from low-power therapeutic pumps to implantable wireless charging technology. At the 2023 Neuroplastic Surgery Symposium, John led a cadaver lab where he instructed attending plastic surgeons and neurosurgeons from around the country on the surgical implantation procedure for the CraniUS device. John has also conducted research in interventional radiology to develop biopsy tools that improve the range and precision of tissue collection.
John chose EnMed to bridge his engineering background with medical training, enabling him to become a physician who actively improves patient care through translational research. He is drawn to EnMed’s mission of training physicianeers and looks forward to caring for patients while applying clinical insights to the development of impactful medical technologies. His current research interests lie in interventional radiology, neurosurgery, and surgical oncology.
In addition to his passion for medicine, John enjoys photography, spending time at the gym, playing games with friends, and relaxing with his cat. He also loves to cook and is a foodie, documenting all of the restaurants he visits around the world.
