Shruthi Garla
Biomedical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin
Shruthi Garla was raised in College Station, TX. She graduated with honors from the University of Texas at Austin, earning a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Computer Science. During her undergraduate studies, she served as a program organizer for SEEK (Student Engineers Educating Kids), where she mentored at-risk elementary school students through hands-on STEM projects. She was an active member of the Austin community, volunteering regularly at food clinics and hospitals, serving as an undergraduate teaching assistant for BME courses, and involved in Biomedical Engineering Society leadership.
Shruthi conducted research in protein engineering, developing novel antibody treatment boosters for cytomegalovirus, and in computational engineering, creating seizure prediction algorithms for traumatic brain injury. Her work has been recognized through research symposiums and presentations.
Shruthi chose EnMed because she is passionate about the intersection of medicine and technology to improve healthcare accessibility, particularly for underserved and diverse populations. She was drawn to the program’s focus on innovation and lifelong learning and its commitment to training physicians who can utilize a diverse skill set in engineering, research, and medicine to improve the standard of care meaningfully. Shruthi hopes to develop the ability to not only enhance treatment outcomes and experiences but also empower and improve the lives of each patient she treats.
In her free time, Shruthi enjoys reading, hiking, and gardening. She also loves listening to music and spending time with her family and friends.
