Zain Syed
Biomedical Engineering, Arizona State University
Born in Karachi, Pakistan, Zain Syed grew up in Toronto, Canada, and Phoenix, Arizona, before graduating summa cum laude from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering. During his undergraduate studies, Zain contributed to Dr. Thurmon Lockhart’s Human Locomotion Research Laboratory, focusing on slip and fall prevention for older adults. His senior thesis, conducted under Dr. Denis Cortese, investigated the impacts of rising temperatures on older adults.
He was also an active member of Engineers Without Borders’ Zelaki Project, working on a plastic recycling initiative in Ethiopia that earned Arizona State University’s President’s Award for Global Engagement. Outside the classroom and lab, Zain gained valuable clinical experience as an attendant care provider for individuals with cognitive disabilities. Zain is passionate about developing systems-level solutions that improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations.
Zain chose the EnMed program for its integration of engineering and medicine, providing the tools to design innovative healthcare solutions that address real clinical needs. He aspires to develop impactful medical technologies that improve quality of life for underserved communities.
Outside of academics, Zain enjoys spending time with his wife, Bella, and their cat, listening to music, and experimenting with Pakistani cooking.
