Natalia Miroballi

Dr. Natalia Miroballi, a recent graduate from Texas A&M School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed), embodies the ambitions of a first-generation student, breaking barriers in healthcare. With a relentless spirit and a family legacy rooted in service, Miroballi’s journey to becoming the first doctor in her family symbolizes the transformative power that one can harness at EnMed.

Born into a family of Filipino immigrants who came to the United States through the nurse exchange program in the 1980s, Miroballi was raised with the values of healthcare and the pursuit of the American dream. “Being surrounded by a family of nurses growing up, I naturally developed a passion for healthcare and service,” Miroballi shares. “I always remember my parents encouraging me to dream big and set goals that might seem scary or out of reach.”

The road to medical school was not without its challenges for Miroballi, especially without the guidance of family members who had walked before her. Reflecting on her journey at EnMed, she recalls the absence of familial counsel when navigating medical opportunities and application procedures. “The most glaring challenge was learning of medical opportunities and the steps needed to apply for certain programs,” she remarks. “The main advantage of having family guidance is their ability to point you in the right direction, help you make connections, and learn of the opportunities and next steps needed.”

Nevertheless, Miroballi’s resilience and resourcefulness pushed her forward. She actively sought support systems and educational programs like the Health Independent Student Mentorship Program (HISM), which provided her with valuable mentorship and exposure to the medical community from a young age. “While these programs are not a magic solution, they are an opportunity to gain exposure, make connections, and learn more about the next steps,” she emphasizes.

Natalia MiroballiMiroballi has remained committed to uplifting future generations and addressing healthcare inequalities throughout her journey. “I hope my contributions to the future of healthcare will be multifaceted,” she asserts. “Not only do I aspire to pay forward the opportunities afforded to me through mentorship and educational outreach, but I also strive to be a physicianeer who is aware of the healthcare inequalities that affect our communities.”

Dr. Natalia Miroballi’s journey is an inspiration for first-generation students who are considering unconventional paths. As she embarks on her medical career with a commitment to excellence, she embodies the profound impact of an EnMed education and its influence on those who aspire to innovate.
