Accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the national accrediting authority for educational programs leading to the MD degree in the U.S. and Canada, is crucial for medical schools and universities. Achieving LCME accreditation confirms that medical education programs meet established standards. The accreditation process serves two main purposes: to encourage institutional self-assessment and enhancement, and to verify that a medical education program complies with set standards.

Current

The medical education program leading to an MD degree is overseen by the Texas A&M University College of Medicine (TAMU COM). The Engineering Medicine (EnMed) program, as delivered by the School of Engineering Medicine, is a parallel curriculum or track within TAMU COM’s medical education program. TAMU COM is fully accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) through 2028.

Future

Given the success of the EnMed program, the School of Engineering Medicine (SEM) has been authorized by Texas A&M University to pursue independent accreditation with the LCMETo initiate this process, the SEM submitted a notice of intent and application fee to the LCME in early April 2025 with a subsequent notification of Applicant Status from the LCME secretariat. Additional details of the application process and timeline will be posted shortly.
