Dr. Roderic Pettigrew represented EnMed at the joint meeting of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine, the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology and the International Society for Magnetic Resonance Radiographers & Technologists in London May 7-12. There, he lead a session to provide insight into developing the EnMed program and the shifting paradigm of medical education along with the dynamics of a research culture from the perspective of institutional leadership.
“As the chief executive officer and inaugural dean of the EnMed program there are experiences of high-level change in creating an educational program that fully integrates engineering and medicine,” said Pettigrew. “Still, funding sourcing is vital to the success of a program like EnMed. Financial partners and resources are keenly situated to advance change in higher educational institutions to ensure future stability and success.”

In the session, Pettigrew shared how to foster an inclusive discussion regarding research culture in the field of clinical magnetic resonance. Further, he pointed out how the current culture helps perpetuate science and how it hinders progress. His remarks centered around who culture promotes, rewards and serves.
Pettigrew said that if academic research is to overcome cultural shortcomings, it will require change at many levels — from institutions and key stakeholders to individual research groups.
