Howdy, Class of 2028! The newest cohort at the Texas A&M School of Engineering Medicine was warmly welcomed during an engaging and informative New Student Orientation session. The orientation set a positive tone on the first day of their academic journey, filled with excitement, camaraderie, and a deep dive into the rich traditions of Texas A&M University.

Breakfast provided an opportunity for new students to connect and start building relationships. To break the ice, they played bingo, encouraging interaction and fostering a sense of community from the outset. After enjoying some fun activities, the students went through important onboarding procedures. They got their official student IDs and badges, had their white coats fitted (an important moment for any medical student), and finished their required paperwork. These steps not only provided them with the necessary tools but also represented their formal entry into the Texas A&M community.

Understanding and embracing the unique traditions of Texas A&M is a key part of becoming an Aggie. During the orientation, the students were introduced to various aspects of Aggie culture and history. They learned about the significance of the Aggie Ring, a cherished symbol of the university’s spirit and unity. The story of the Century Tree, a campus landmark where proposals are made, and lifelong commitments are celebrated, was shared, along with the quirky tradition of leaving Pennies on Sully, the statue of Lawrence Sullivan Ross, for good luck on exams.

The new students also learned about the story Reveille, the revered mascot of Texas A&M, and the Corps of Cadets, the largest uniformed student body outside the service academies. The solemn traditions of the Aggie Muster and Silver Taps, which honor and remember fallen Aggies, were explained, instilling a sense of pride and respect for the university’s heritage. To keep the energy fun, cool prizes were awarded to those who correctly answered questions about these traditions.

To set the stage for academic success, the new students had the opportunity to engage with faculty, professors, and student affairs representatives. This open forum allowed them to ask questions in real time and gain insights into the program, providing a supportive and informed start to their studies.

The orientation also included a tour of the EnMed Innovation Lab, a state-of-the-art facility where students can bring their most creative ideas to life. Seeing the lab firsthand sparked excitement and curiosity about the projects they will undertake during the semester. This glimpse into their future work environment reaffirms their decision to join the Texas A&M School of Engineering Medicine and emphasizes the program’s practical, hands-on approach.
