Dr. Geoffrey Meyer has made a mark on students and faculty alike in Texas and Australia. As a visiting instructional professor and course director at Texas A&M University School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed) in Houston, Texas, he co-directs the Medical Gross Anatomy (MGA) course alongside Dr. Rhome Hughes. But that’s just part of his remarkable journey. Across the globe, Dr. Meyer also holds the title of professor and senior honorary research fellow at the University of Western Australia (UWA) in Perth.

For several months each year, Dr. Meyer brings his rich expertise in anatomy, neuroanatomy, and histology to EnMed. With over 40 years of experience, his involvement is pivotal to the program, offering students a world-class education shaped by decades of teaching and research.

Dr. Meyer’s qualifications are as impressive as his career. He holds a BSc (Hons) and Ph.D., is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (FRSB) and has been honored with numerous awards, including the prestigious Australian University Teaching Award, International Excellence in Innovation in Teaching, Learning, and Technology Award, and UWA’s Excellence in Innovation in Teaching Award. His list of accolades speaks volumes, but his passion for teaching truly defines his legacy.

He was also honored with a UWA Teaching Fellowship and a highly coveted Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) Fellowship. Additionally, Dr. Meyer has led several ALTC project grants and continues to play an influential role as an assessor for both ALTC grants and the Australian University Teaching Awards.

As a research scientist in reproductive biology, Dr. Meyer used electron microscopy to investigate cellular changes during the growth of the corpus luteum during pregnancy. He also used the developing corpus luteum as a model to study angiogenesis, and his most significant contribution was describing how capillary lumens form. This was important knowledge for developing strategies to inhibit angiogenesis and, therefore, tumor growth or enhance angiogenesis during wound healing.

“I believe in the power of teaching to leave a lasting impression,” Dr. Meyer shares. And that belief runs deep in his family. The front page of his Ph.D. thesis is dedicated to his parents, which read: “To my parents – my most treasured teachers.” Now a parent and grandparent, Dr. Meyer strives to pass along the same selflessness and wisdom to his children—and his students. “I’ve always tried to emulate my parents’ wonderful parenting,” he says. “My goal is to leave a lasting impression on every student, just as my parents did for me.”

In addition to his roles at EnMed and UWA, Dr. Meyer is a trailblazer in histology education. He teaches medical, dental, and chiropractic students across three universities in Perth and has developed innovative teaching tools, including his award-winning interactive online atlas, Meyer’s Histology. This resource provides educational content and a virtual microscopy platform used by students worldwide.

Dr. Meyer’s global influence extends further still. As a subject matter expert for Elsevier Publishing’s “Complete Anatomy” platform, he helps shape medical education on a broader scale. He’s also been recognized by Lecturio Medical Education as one of the “Best Educators” for histology and serves on their Faculty Advisory Board.

As a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Dr. Meyer previously served as the Coordinator for Histology on the Federative International Program for Anatomical Terminologies (FIPAT) under the International Federation of Associations of Anatomists (IFAA)

Despite these towering accomplishments, Dr. Meyer remains down-to-earth. He finds joy in life’s simple pleasures, from snorkeling in Archipelago dos Abrolhos to spending time with his wife, Christine. One of his favorite memories is when the couple attended a post-COVID costume party in Perth, where Dr. Meyer dressed as the Premier of Western Australia playfully. Christine wore a vaccination syringe costume—a moment that captures his sense of humor and zest for life.

At the heart of his journey lies a profound love for learning, teaching, and family. “The best part of my work is knowing that I’m helping shape future generations,” Dr. Meyer says with a warm smile. Through his teaching, research, and personal connections, Dr. Geoffrey Meyer leaves an unforgettable impact on everyone fortunate enough to cross his path.
