The Texas A&M University System Board of Regents has officially approved a $15 million investment to expand innovative laboratory facilities at Texas A&M’s School of Engineering Medicine (EnMed) Tower, located in the Texas Medical Center in Houston.
This construction project aims to bolster on-site research capabilities, positioning the institution to attract top-tier faculty researchers to the prestigious School of Engineering Medicine at Texas A&M, which is home to the EnMed’s program. In this innovative program, students pursue a medical degree and master’s degree in engineering innovation concurrently. Students, also known as physicianeers, enrolled in the program are tasked with developing groundbreaking solutions to contemporary healthcare challenges. Construction for this project is scheduled to commence in July 2024, with completion anticipated by May 2025.
Chancellor John Sharp of the Texas A&M University System highlighted the positive impact of EnMed’s expanding presence in Houston, emphasizing the strategic advantage on-site research capabilities bring to the program.
Dr. Roderic Pettigrew, the inaugural dean of the School of Engineering Medicine, conveyed excitement about securing essential office and research space. He highlighted that EnMed has the potential for groundbreaking advancements in healthcare through the integration of engineering and medicine. The program has already demonstrated promising developments in this regard.
